about

The latest Going In release, “Suspended Animation,” comes from Ryan Crosson, who needs no introduction in the world of dance music. He’s made a name for himself across the last decade with a rich discography showcasing the influence of his Detroit techno roots and affiliation running Visionquest Records. This latest release amplifies his exploration into experimental and ambient compositions, which sprouted from a love for movie soundtracks, scoring, and sound design. His previous work with Cesar Merveille put him on a path towards longform recordings and taking this first step in that direction on his own.

He defines suspended animation as “the slowing or stopping of biological functions so that the physiological can be preserved.” The history of deep listening is characterized by the act of focusing on music as meditation, and Crosson presents a 40-minute narrative that oscillates between luminous, weightless patterns and thick, tonal textures. After the initial liftoff, there is a cinematic plunge into a wall of sound that eventually breaks. Now you’re soaring above the clouds. A peaceful center forms and shifts into dynamic layers that emulate the elements of nature—harmonizing all at once. Percussion builds like a wave, intensifying as you go further in. A vocal drone and reverbed piano brings a darkness that is never ominous, but enveloping.

The pace remains steady and grounding throughout. A subtle change evokes the feeling of dawn or clouds parting in the sky. A balance of suspension and support layer and cross one another in the foreground. The piece funnels to a near silence, but crescendos for a final segment that revisits and reinterprets what came before it, shining bright and full before softly fading back into silence.
