about

Abby Echiverri’s latest for Going In, Sketches on Loss and Levity, is a luminous meditation on beauty and grief that hooks us from the moment of its inception to the moment of its end. Echiverri, whose releases have found homes on labels like The Bunker NY and Infinite Refractions, delivers a powerful live set imbued with emotion. Originally recorded in a single take for Going In’s streaming event, Sketches on Loss and Levity begins with a simple melody produced from only a few notes before radically evolving and blossoming. Echiverri allows space for this process, which in this case feels intimate. She says, “this set was the first piece of music I worked on after a period of creative dormancy and processing grief.” This sentiment shows — everything is tinged with a bit of melancholy (but not melodrama). Harmonic tones floating in the backdrop make everything feel soft around the edges, as if there’s acceptance in that grief. We are carried along in her current, and it is one that is gentle and deep.

Echiverri’s live sets spring from a natural place, which is likely the result of her years of learning and training as both a musician and electrical engineer. In her live work, she leads from a place of instinct which keeps the ear easily engaged. You get the sense that she is one with her instrument(s) — not only the array of modular gear in her studio, but other instruments as well. At a certain point she picks up a violin, records a spontaneous phrase, then feeds it back into the soundscape, so that it continues to meld with the other sonic elements. It’s choices like this that show Echiverri is perfectly attuned to the mood of the set and its needs. At times, her choices are unexpected, like timing notes just slightly off-rhythm, which skillfully jolts the atmosphere and makes the piece even more dynamic. The result is powerful, and the atmosphere is charged with a sense of mourning but also acceptance, beauty, and stillness. Altogether, Sketches on Loss and Levity is a poignant and moving meditation that breathes an abundance of life into a single hour.

This piece is dedicated to Arianne, Crispin, Judy, Loretta, and Shintaro
