Brooklyn-based DJ and producer Juan Maclean, usually known for his power and versatility as a dance DJ, has offered Going In an intimate ambient release, Ritual Device. As the name suggests, it’s informed by Maclean’s experiences as a ritual healer, and its intentions are clear: this is music for the deep seeker, for the psychedelic session, for the inward journey.

Composed of droning modulations that expand and contract over the course of the arrangement, the tonal frequencies that transform over the course of the hour are charged with a vital power. And Ritual Device is meant to charge physical and mental spaces with that power, too; in Maclean’s own words, “It is entirely meant for psychedelic journeying, preferably with an eye mask on. It is not meant to be directive or prescriptive, but more so provide a platform that is open ended and cosmic.” Nothing invades the psyche too abruptly or dramatically: this is a slow burn, made with the entheogenic journey in mind, and it’s careful not to override the experience of the voyager. Rather, it’s a tool to facilitate that experience.

Though made from a combination of synths and vibrational instruments, Ritual Device retains a sense of the natural. Subtler elements punctuate the arrangement; it begins with an occasional, distant bell sounding in slow rhythm, while low drone wafts through the backdrop. The drone gets louder, deepening, until it increases in intensity and fills the space with its presence. At times, Maclean peppers the soundscape with surprising elements: a human mouth whistling and blowing, verbal echoes, or a distant wolf howl. All of these infuse Ritual Device with an organic quality, despite its emphasis on frequency modulation and vibration. But these oscillations are also natural, and a poignant reminder that frequency—energy—is what we’re made of too. Whether one chooses to listen in a ritual setting or not, Ritual Device has the potential to aid in the process of turning inwards, moving energy, and healing. At best, it serves to facilitate an experience, rather than existing in and of itself. Therefore, a spirit of collaboration is inherent in this piece, even if it ultimately serves the individual by helping them get beyond their own mind.
