The next release for Going In, For Hours and Seasons, comes from Portland, OR-based artist J.F. Burma. Conceptually built around the passing of time, For Hours and Seasons is arranged in four distinct movements, each loosely representing a season. The experience of listening is the experience of moving through time, and yet the hypnotic quality of the music also creates a sensation of standing still. Inherently cinematic and brimming with field recordings, it’s as if the listener can visualize the seasons: the slanted light of autumn, a cricket-filled summer, transformation of the elements. And yet the composition begins and ends in the same way: with a watery stillness that shows time’s passing as cyclical rather than linear.
For Hours and Seasons is also influenced by Burma’s physical environment; field recordings taken in Oregon and Washington are seamlessly integrated into a backdrop of harmonic synth and 303 patterning. What distinguishes Burma’s work is his ability to create music that feels deeply infused with nature. Whether it’s the placid repetition of certain tones or phrases, the sound of chirping insects, or delicate high notes that bring to mind glittering stars, Burma’s music emulates and mirrors the orchestra of the natural world. Rhythms arise naturally and are in no way forced. Slow layering occurs when one element is introduced, then another, then another, creating a build so organic that it’s almost imperceptible. The result is a gorgeous interplay of sound and texture, external and internal spaces, seasons and nature.

I use music as accompaniment to keep me focused when I write. I love the sounds on this single-track album. Excellent accompaniment. Keeps me going and focused. There are other good things about it - but this is what matters most to me. utahsteve
